Chicken Fried Steak

Remember my Pioneer Woman kicks a few weeks ago? Yea, it's back. This time I wanted to try out making chicken fried steak with a side of macaroni and cheese with some tomato salad. For the record, this was my  first time eating and making chicken fried steak ever. It was really good, I'm not a hundred percent sure it was authentic but it was delicious, it was approved by the hubby too.

The mac and cheese recipe is my own, even though PW has an amazing recipe on her blog as well and the tomato salad was inspired by her because that is what she served her chicken fried steak with too. It was a nice refreshing balance paired with the heavier steak. You can pretty much make this meal with any steak you prefer. I used a bottom round sandwich steak that I tenderized beforehand.

Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy
Yield: 4 Servings
Prep Time: 20 minutes     I     Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients
  • 1lb bottom round sandwich steaks that have been tenderized
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt & pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Mix the salt, pepper and cayenne in with the flour and place in a container to be used for breading. Whisk the eggs and put them in a different container. Coat the steaks in the egg thoroughly and then in the flour and repeat. Heat up some canola oil in a deep skillet and cook the steaks about 2-2 1/2 minutes on each side. When you have finished all of the steaks set them aside and prepare to make the gravy.

Pour a cup of flour into the pan and whisk into the grease until it forms a thick paste. When the gravy is thick and brown in color start to pour in the milk while whisking continually. Season with salt and pepper and continue whisking until it has become a nice smooth gravy.

Serve with macaroni and cheese and a light tomato salad.
